Learn More about this Project

The TMA AmeriCorps VISTA member will assist the Center for Civic and Community Engagement at Howard Community College in the development of the Dragon Family Closet, a new campus resource designed to support student parents in our campus community and complement existing offerings in our Fueling Dragons and Parent Scholars programs. In the first year, duties will include setting up the physical space and connecting with campus and community partners who will contribute support. Procedures for tracking student patronage of the Closet would need to be developed, in addition to systems for inventory and storage of materials to be distributed through the closet and proposed budgets for maintaining the Closet once operational. A community audit will be conducted to assess existing and potential needs in our target student parent population.

Learn More about this Project

International Rescue Committee's (IRC) Community Engagement Program is the outward-facing department of IRC-MD. University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks Corner Community Engagement Project

Sponsor Organization: University of Maryland Eastern Shore
Service Location: Princess Anne, Maryland

Learn More about this Project

As the county’s only higher education institution, with a faculty representing over 30 countries, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is poised to provide world-class exposure to Knowledge Transfer and Knowledge Sharing in this community where the need is so great. Given the lack of educational attainment, the high levels of poverty, and the limited access to well-paid employment opportunities in the community surrounding UMES, there is a unique and powerful role that the university could play in bringing learning resources and expanded horizons to the people in this area. With this in mind, the overall goal of the UMES-Community Knowledge Sharing and Transfer Initiative is to create and maintain reciprocal opportunities for UMES students to engage in the life of Princess Anne and for people in the community to engage in the life of the campus. Not only would this raise the level of access to trainings, workshops, town halls, and other kinds of activities for community members, but it would foster a more open and welcoming, reciprocal relationship benefitting both the community and the campus.

Former AmeriCorps VISTA member at UMES Michael Morgan helped to build the capacity of the institution's ShoreWay Experience project by developing college and career readiness among underrepresented K-12 students in higher education throughout Somerset County, Maryland. You can listen to Mike's experiences by listening to this episode of the Stories of Service Podcast.
