TMA VISTA Cohorts: 2022–2023, 2023–2024
Program Administrator at

Disabled Veterans National Foundation

The VISTA Project

The Challenge
During her initial service year at Bowie State University, Asia addressed the critical link between food insecurity and student retention. The "Feed the Need" program required a leader to move the Nutrition Lounge from a passive resource to a high-visibility campus support system through intentional outreach and data-driven tracking.

The Solution
Asia transformed the program by securing over $10,000 in new funding and building a robust volunteer network of 10 students who contributed over 200 service hours. She formalized partnerships with the Capital Area Food Bank and local community organizations to ensure a steady supply chain. Recognizing her capacity for systems-level thinking, Asia then returned for a second year as a VISTA Leader, where she shifted to mentoring a regional cohort of VISTAs to maximize their own community impact.

The Legacy
Asia’s work created a sustainable infrastructure for basic needs at BSU, including the first formal tracking mechanisms for student interventions. Her career path demonstrates the direct bridge between national service and professional program administration; the experience she gained managing complex donor relationships and volunteer cohorts prepared her for her current role as Program Administrator at the Disabled Veterans National Foundation.

Life After VISTA

Asia’s career trajectory is a testament to how AmeriCorps VISTA serves as a professional incubator. By managing complex donor relationships and building volunteer systems at Bowie State University, she developed the foundational skills required for high-level nonprofit administration. Her transition from a VISTA Member to a VISTA Leader allowed her to pivot from direct service to regional strategy, a shift that directly mirrored the responsibilities of her current professional role.

As the Program Administrator at the Disabled Veterans National Foundation, Asia applies the same commitment to organizational efficiency and community care that defined her time with AmeriCorps. She continues to advocate for vulnerable populations, utilizing the strategic growth and partnership-building skills she honed during her service to manage critical resources for veterans nationwide.
