We have seen how Krystal uses her position, knowledge, and resources to empower and serve our students. Her consistent selfless actions in the service of others, whether it be in food distribution in the community or student leadership initiatives, have impacted the student body positively at UMES. ...It is remarkable to see Krystal help other students fulfill their dreams while she is on her journey to fulfill her own.

-Dr. Heidi M. Anderson
President, University of Maryland Eastern Shore

My name is Krystal Ibeawuchi, a Junior at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, majoring in Biology with a concentration in Pre-Allied Health. Growing up in the United Kingdom, the education systems were slightly different. Education in the United Kingdom was in-depth with different types of subjects, from home economics to financial literacy. This being the structure of the school I attended, molded the foundation of my leadership. On campus, I am a part of the Student Government Association as the Junior Class President and a member of the illustrious organization Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Being involved in campus organizations has opened a wider range of opportunities and insight into things I’ve never imagined. I use my leadership positions such as being the class President, to spread knowledge about local organizations that promote equity, diversity, and justice for the community.

By being a part of these organizations, I’ve found myself and it has molded me into the person I am today. Such as giving back to the community, volunteering for food distribution centers, and collaborating with different organizations within the campus community.  I carry my titles with pride for the individuals who don't have the voice to state their issues and for people who don’t know where they stand. I want to use my connections within my community to make dreams come to reality.
