For Kyra, leadership means leading through service—listening closely, motivating with intention, and fostering an environment where VISTA members feel confident to grow, take initiative, and contribute to sustainable local change.
What She’s Looking Forward To
This year, Kyra is most excited about building strong relationships across the TMA VISTA network and learning from the diverse experiences members bring with them. She’s equally energized by her own personal and professional growth in this leadership role and by the opportunity to help strengthen systems that support communities in meaningful, long-term ways.
Growing as a Leader
Kyra is especially interested in deepening her understanding of systems thinking. She’s eager to explore how different parts of the TMA VISTA program and network interact—and how small shifts, like improvements to recruitment or onboarding processes, can create ripple effects across the entire program.

Before Becoming a VISTA Leader
Kyra graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in Health, Physical Education, and Exercise Science (HPEX). She went on to serve as an AmeriCorps VISTA with MEGA Mentors in Richmond, Virginia, supporting a program that pairs elementary, middle, and high school students in Chesterfield County Public Schools with mentors to provide guidance, support, and positive role modeling.
In Spring 2025, Kyra earned her master’s degree in Health Sciences from Meharry Medical College—bringing both academic insight and hands-on service experience into her leadership work.
Leadership Style
Kyra describes her leadership style as calm and grounding. She brings stability and reassurance to the spaces she’s in and balances big-picture thinking with attention to detail. She’s also a gentle challenger—supporting people while encouraging them to stretch, reflect, and grow.
The Big Debate
Are hot dogs sandwiches?
Kyra’s answer: Absolutely. By definition, a hot dog checks every sandwich box—and she’s prepared to defend this stance with logic.
