WHAT IS AN IMPORTANT QUALITY OF AN EFFECTIVE LEADER?
"Humility in service to others and the commitment to recognizing and uplifting others’ strengths are leadership skills I embody. My understanding of leadership is grounded in my Christian faith and the teachings of the Bible, particularly Philippians 2:3–4, which calls us to value others above ourselves. These principles guide how I lead at home, school, and church, whether caring for my siblings, supporting my peers academically, or teaching in children’s church. Leadership requires creating environments where individuals feel valued and respected."
WHAT'S A COMMUNITY-BASED ISSUE THAT YOU CARE ABOUT?
"One pressing issue at Howard Community College is food insecurity, the lack of consistent access to nutritious food due to financial instability. According to Feeding America, over 35,000 individuals in Howard County experience food insecurity. Additionally, changes to SNAP eligibility and benefits may further impact students’ ability to access food. To address this issue, I have volunteered with campus initiatives such as the HCC Campus Garden, which provides fresh produce for the campus food pantry, and Plant-Powered Wednesday, a program supported by the Jain Family Foundation that distributes free plantbased meals to students. Research shows that hunger negatively affects concentration and academic performance, so ensuring students have access to food is critical for their success. Through my involvement, I have contributed to increasing food access for my peers."
TELL US ABOUT SOMETHING OR SOMEONE THAT INSPIRES YOU?
"My leadership philosophy is inspired by Matthew 23: 11–12, which emphasizes that true leadership is rooted in service and humility. I aim to lead with empathy and inclusivity, putting these values into action by using my American Sign Language skills to support individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing and by helping bridge language barriers within my church community. Through this fellowship, I hope to continue growing as a leader who serves others with humility, builds meaningful connections, and creates opportunities that uplift individuals and communities. I am committed to using my skills, experiences, and faith to make a lasting positive impact."
