WHAT IS AN IMPORTANT QUALITY OF AN EFFECTIVE LEADER?
"When I think about leadership, the qualities that stand out most are empathy, communication, and consistency. Leadership is not just about directing others; it is about understanding people, listening to their perspectives, and helping create an environment where everyone feels supported and motivated to contribute. Leaders who catalyze positive change make others feel heard and empowered. Being a Team Leader with the Shriver Center has taught me many things about leadership, and one of my greatest takeaways is that leadership often means helping others grow and discover their own voice."
WHAT'S A COMMUNITY-BASED ISSUE THAT YOU CARE ABOUT?
"One complex problem I see both on campus and in the broader community is the lack of mentorship opportunities for younger students who may not have strong academic or creative support systems. Many students, particularly at the elementary level, benefit greatly from having role models who encourage them to explore their interests and build confidence in their abilities. Through my volunteer work at Catonsville Elementary School, I have seen how even small acts of mentorship can make a meaningful difference. By spending time with students, helping them with activities, and encouraging their curiosity, volunteers can help create a positive environment where children feel supported. In the future, I hope to continue addressing this challenge by expanding opportunities for mentorship and encouraging more students to participate in community engagement programs."
TELL US ABOUT SOMETHING OR SOMEONE THAT INSPIRES YOU?
"One quote that has stayed with me comes from the song 'Written in Your Heart' from the film Barbie: The Princess and the Pauper: 'When you find your place, when you know where you belong, you’ll never leave.' To me, this quote reflects the importance of helping people discover their passions and their sense of belonging. When individuals are supported and encouraged, they are more likely to pursue the things that truly inspire them. This idea connects strongly to my mission as a community-engaged student leader. Through mentoring and volunteering, I hope to help create environments where others feel supported and confident in exploring their interests. Not everyone has access to mentors or role models who encourage them, and even small moments of guidance can make a lasting impact. If I can help someone discover their own place where they feel valued and capable, then that is meaningful leadership."
