Tavon M. Johnson
TMA VISTA Cohort: 2020-2021
AmeriCorps Program Manager
Wisconsin Association of Free and Charitable Clinics (WAFCC)
The VISTA Project
Tavon was a regional VISTA Leader serving directly with TMA during a fully virtual service year. Operating as a critical link between members, site supervisors, and the sponsor organization, his mission was to build organizational capacity across host sites in the Mid-Atlantic region to ensure long-term, sustainable impact for communities experiencing poverty.
The Challenge
Tavon stepped into his leadership role just as the COVID-19 pandemic fundamentally disrupted traditional, in-person national service. After only a single week of in-person onboarding, the entire regional network transitioned to a fully remote environment. VISTA members across the region were suddenly tasked with building capacity, navigating complex community poverty issues, and creating new organizational systems while isolated from their host sites and working entirely through computer screens.
The Solution
Drawing on his extensive background in youth development, coaching, and multi-term national service, Tavon stepped up to mentor and support a regional cohort of more than 30 VISTA members. He facilitated virtual professional development sessions, conducted regular one-on-one check-ins, assisted with remote onboarding, and acted as a liaison to maintain clear communication and accountability across all sites. Recognizing that connection was key to member retention during an unprecedented crisis, he developed standardized virtual resources, communication tools, and resource guides that kept members engaged and aligned with their core missions.
Beyond member support, Tavon served as a powerful advocate for higher education accessibility. Leveraging his own journey, where matching his Segal Education Awards enabled him to earn a Master’s in Education Policy at Marquette University, he actively promoted the "Schools of National Service" initiative to encourage institutions across the region to match education awards for AmeriCorps alumni.
The Legacy
Tavon’s empathetic leadership provided the necessary structure and morale to guide over 30 VISTA members through one of the most disruptive periods in recent history. The standardized communication practices, onboarding materials, and tracking mechanisms he established created a sustainable framework that future VISTA Leaders and staff continued to use long after his service ended. His efforts kept regional capacity-building projects on track, ensuring uninterrupted support for local schools, non-profits, and community agencies serving under-resourced populations.
Life After VISTA
Navigating a regional cohort through a global pandemic solidified Tavon's career trajectory in non-profit leadership and program management. Fueled by his passion for national service and community engagement, he completed his Master’s degree in Education Policy at Marquette University. Today, Tavon applies the exact coaching, system-building, and managerial skills he honed during his VISTA year to manage a statewide AmeriCorps program at WAFCC, where he mentors and prepares the next generation of service leaders.
