Vasudevan "Vasu" Moodley
TMA VISTA Cohort: 2019-2020
Director of Economic Empowerment at
University of Maryland SAFE Center for Human Trafficking Survivors
The VISTA Project
After an accomplished, decades-long career in global non-profit work, Vasu Moodley moved from South Africa to the United States with the intention of retiring. However, driven by a deep conviction that his community work wasn't finished, he decided to get back into the working environment. A friend suggested AmeriCorps VISTA, and Vasu stepped into his service term in 2020 with Transform Mid-Atlantic. He was placed at the University of Maryland SAFE Center for Human Trafficking Survivors, an initiative of the University of Maryland Strategic Partnership (MPowering the State).
The Challenge
Vasu’s primary objective was to build the SAFE Center’s capacity to provide sustainable economic empowerment and volunteer infrastructure. This mission faced an immediate, unprecedented hurdle: the sudden onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Operational demands shifted instantly toward pivoting services online, ensuring remote safety protocols, and addressing acute systemic crises—such as housing and food insecurity—facing vulnerable trafficking survivors during a global public health emergency.
The Solution
Vasu directly confronted these challenges by leveraging his vast background in community development to implement resilient virtual systems.
-
He researched university policies to draft the SAFE Center Zoom Guidelines, establishing secure online meeting spaces that protected client privacy. Under this framework, he successfully launched the center's first virtual, two-hour GED mentoring sessions.
-
Vasu systematically built programmatic resources from scratch. He researched and compiled a pandemic-specific funding database featuring 42 national and regional grant opportunities. He went on to draft rapid-response funding proposals to the Greater Washington Community Foundation, requesting up to $18,000 to distribute comprehensive IT equipment and computers to 30 participants for remote career training.
-
Working alongside a cohort of student volunteers, Vasu co-researched, formatted, and edited essential client materials. This included the center's COVID-19 Resource Guide for Survivors—a translated English and Spanish publication covering emergency federal tax credits, housing protections, and local food banks—as well as a standardized GED Program Handbook.
The Legacy
By the conclusion of his service year, Vasu’s capacity-building efforts directly optimized the center’s volunteer recruitment and management systems. His term yielded 5 new structural enhancements and business processes, logged dozens of collective community volunteer service hours, and secured thousands of dollars in leveraged in-kind support. Most importantly, his speed-to-market rollout of the online Career Readiness and Employability Training platform left a permanent blueprint for remote survivor advocacy.
Life After VISTA
Vasu's VISTA term seamlessly set the stage for the next major chapter of his storied career. Recognizing his invaluable administrative and strategic contributions, the SAFE Center brought him on as a permanent staff member.
Today, Vasu has over 21 years of specialized international non-profit experience spanning South Africa, India, and the United States, with a core focus on adult basic education for social change. His leadership background includes serving as Business Manager for CV Projects SA—where he spearheaded the rural S3Village Integrated Development Project—and as Trustee of the James Nxumalo Education Trust. Notably, he is the former Acting Director of Operation Upgrade of South Africa, an adult literacy non-profit that was honored with the prestigious UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy in 2008. He also brought years of civic leadership to his path, having served as a Rotarian with the Rotary Club of Umhlanga from 2012 to 2019.
Vasu currently serves as the Director of Operations for the SAFE Center. Working out of College Park, he commands the facility's operational backbone. He remains a vital part of a multidisciplinary team dedicated to providing survivor-centered, trauma-informed services, research, and policy advocacy that empower human trafficking survivors to heal, break generational cycles of poverty, and safely reclaim their lives.
